Valerius have realised a great deal within a short period of time: they’ve played most major venues, two hitsingles, received support from every aspect of the media, and seen their debut album enter the top 5 in the iTunes charts. The ambitious brothers Jesse and Kay Nambiar already knew what they wanted to achieve from a very young age. They started singing around the age of twelve, and went on to take guitar lessons soon after. From the very early stages they would seek out and compile their own chords and sounds. Putting a real band together was simply a matter of time; that band became Valerius. The name derives from Amsterdam’s Valeriusplein, the square where their school was located, and where they set up their first rehearsal space in a small attic room. “It was a really cool time”, Kay reminisces. “We were just a bunch of kids, who thought we could conquer the world.” Around six years ago, their career suddenly snowballed after an encounter with Reinder van Zalk, owner of the Amsterdam-based Earforce Studios. The experienced producer helped to further develop the band’s distinctive sound. Earforce would not only become the regular studio for the band, but also their management.

With their diverse musical preferences, the brothers complement each other perfectly. Jesse is into R&B, soul, Michael Jackson, and John Mayer. Kay on the other hand is a keen listener of indie, especially Radiohead and Jeff Buckley. “But we always manage to find common ground within our songs”, Kay reveals. “That’s when everything falls right into place. We’re a real song-oriented band.” Anyone who listens to their recently released debut album will say the same. Backed by Jesse’s soulful vocals, Kay’s tasteful guitar sound, and the fluent rhythms devised by bassist Xander Vrienten and drummer and childhood pal Georgy Patrick, the twelve songs are a real joy to listen to.
Kay describes their sound as “pop with a rock touch”. Although the Nambiar brothers penned most of the tracks, Kay emphasizes that Valerius is a real band. “Jesse and I come up with most of the ideas, but it’s not until we put them together with the whole group, that they become the songs you hear on the album.”

There’s been no shortage of media attention. The leading Dutch pop channel 3FM recently declared Valerius ‘Serious Talent’. The band has appeared on virtually all the Dutch radio and TV channels, from Radio 538 to TMF.
Music publications such as Hitkrant and Off The Record have picked up on Valerius. MTV Europe even let the group shoot a promo for their catchy first single She Doesn’t Know, which went on to become a summer hit in 2009. They embarked on a tour of Europe with top US act The Jonas Brothers, and shared a bill with Lifehouse. “Both bands are keen to play with us again at some time in the future”, Kay says proudly. Looking back at all their adventures, the thing that has given him the single biggest buzz is their debut album, which was launched on March 26. “It’s the reward for all our hard work during the past eighteen months.” The album was very well received, and entered the iTunes album top 10 within its very first week of release.

As expected, the debut album’s release was not a low-key affair. On the day, the band drove through Holland in a special Pepsi Monstertruck, before playing a packed venue in Amsterdam for the album launch. “It was an awesome day”, Kay concludes happily. We reckon there are a lot more days like it in store for the boys. They are no longer kids, but they still have big plans. “If there’s one thing we’ve learned from all our live gigs, it’s that you have to focus. It’s the only way to bring out the best in you as a musician.”
