Sir Bobby Robson Dies After Losing Cancer Battle
The name synonymous with the north-east, and England, has died after losing his cancer battle...

He said last year, "My condition is described as static and has not altered since my last bout of chemotherapy... I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute."
The legendary trainer is widely considered to be a gentleman of the sport, and originally made his name as a deep-lying forward during the 1950's when he represented west London club Fulham. He bragged a promising strike-rate and transferred to West Bromwich Albion during the middle of the decade, before returning to the Cottagers in 1962.
He turned to management in 1968, representing Fulham, Ipswich - where he helped the team excel, England - where he gave the nation the greatest hope of glory since 1966, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Barcelona, and Newcastle United.
With Ipswich, he took an undesired outfit into a period of sustained success that saw Town pick up two League runner-up medals, an FA Cup winners medal, and an UEFA Cup winners medal. His exploits with the Tractor Boys earned him the Three Lions post, where he was to famously end up branding Diego Maradona a "rascal" for his hand-of-God goal, and four years later he consoled Paul Gascoigne following an unsuccessful penalty shoot-out in the semi-final of Italia '90.
He won two Dutch titles with PSV, championships with Porto, and a European Cup Winners Cup with Barca.
The Bobby Robson Foundation was set up on March 2008 after he was diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time. He had defeated the disease in the early 1990's, when he contracted bowel cancer, and a malignant melanoma.
Despite his deteriorating condition, he still travelled to see his beloved football clubs in the north-east, and could often be found - sporting a hat and in good spirits - cheering on teams such as Newcastle United.
His passion for the game endeared him to millions.

Salah satu mantan pelatih timnas yang menoreh catatan emas, mengantarkan The Three Lions melaju ke babak semifinal Piala Dunia (PD) 1990, Sir Bobby Robson, pada Jumat (31/7) pagi waktu setempat meninggal dunia dalam usia 76 tahun di rumahnya yang terletak di County Durham, Inggris Timur Laut.
Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, Robson berjuang keras melawan kanker dan divonis mengidap tumor di kedua paru-parunya. Robson dikabarkan meninggal dengan tenang. “Kesedihan yang mendalam buat kami untuk mengabarkan bahwa pada hari ini Sir Robson telah menyerah dari upayanya berjuang melawan kanker. Ia meninggal dengan tenang pagi ini di rumahnya di County Durham dengan disaksikan istri dan keluarganya,” demikian pernyataan resmi keluarga Robson seperti yang dikutip The Guardian.
Lebih lanjut keluarga Robson menyatakan prosesi pemakaman akan dilakukan secara tertutup dan hanya dihadiri anggota keluarga dan kerabat. “Pemakanan Sir Bobby akan digelar secara private dan hanya dihadiri anggota keluarga. Lady Robson dan keluarga akan sangat menghargai jika selama masa duka, privacy keluarga bisa dihormati,” imbuhnya.
Wafatnya Robson cukup mengejutkan mengingat pada Minggu (26/7) lalu ia dengan duduk di kursi roda sempat menghadiri pertandingan amal yang dimaksudkan untuk menghormati jasa-jasanya dalam persepakbolaan Inggris yang digelar di St James Park Stadium, Newcastle, dan dihadiri sekitar 30 ribu penonton.
Hampir 20 tahun Robson berkarir sebagai pesepakbola. Selama itu pula ia hanya bermain bersama tiga klub: Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, dan Vancouver Royals. Selama lima tahun, 1957-1962, Robson memperkuat Timnas Inggris dengan rekor 20 caps dan empat gol.
Seusai gantung sepatu, Robson mengubah haluan menjadi pelatih atau manajer. Kesuksesannya yang paling diingat publik adalah saat mengantarkan The Three Lions melaju ke semifinal PD 1990 yang berlangsung di Italia. Ketika itu, skuad Robson harus mengakui keunggulan Timnas Jerman lewat adu penalti.
Bersama klub, Robson mampu menjadikan PSV Eindhoven merajai kompetisi Eredivise di musim 1990-1991 dan 1991-1992. Robson pun berhasil mengantarkan gelar liga Portugal bagi FC Porto (1995 dan 1996). Setahun di Barcelona, Robson meraih gelar Copa del Rey dan European Cup Winners Cup di tahun 1997.
