The group was initially formed as a subunit of the female idol group Sakura Gakuin under the concept of a "fusion of metal and idol". BabyMetal's first indie CD single, titled "BabyMetal × Kiba of Akiba", ranked 3rd in the Oricon weekly indie chart and number one in the Tower Records Shibuya weekly indie ranking. The band's major debut single "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" sold 19,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 6 in the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart.
In the spring of 2013, Suzuka Nakamoto graduated from junior high school and therefore had to "graduate" from the group Sakura Gakuin (that consists of girls of up to junior high). However, it was decided by the management that BabyMetal would not dissolve and would continue their activities as a band. The group has released its next single, titled "Megitsune" on Wednesday, June 19.
On May 18, BabyMetal announced that they would attend the "Summer Sonic 2013" rock festival which will be held in Tokyo and Osaka on August 10 & 11, 2013. It will be their second time performing at the concert.

Nakamoto Suzuka (中元すず香) is a Japanese actress and singer under the agency Amuse. She was a member of the idol group Karen Girl's and is currently a member of Sakura Gakuin. Before her professional debut, Nakamoto was a student at the Actors School Hiroshima, whose graduates include Perfume. In 2003, she won the grand prix award for the Bandai Jewel Drop Image Girl Contest. After that, she also won the grand prix award at Amuse's 2nd Annual Star Kids Audition that started Nakamoto's career. In 2008, Nakamoto joined the idol group Karen Girl's under the name SUZUKA until their breakup in 2009. A year later, she began to appear in musicals. She then joined the idol group Sakura Gakuin in 2010.

Kikuchi Moa (菊地最愛) is a Japanese actress, model, talent, and member of the idol group Sakura Gakuin under the agency Amuse. Kikuchi got her start after winning the grand prix award, out of 10,000 applicants, for the "Ciao Girl Audition 2007" and won a contract with Amuse. Three years later, she joined the idol group Sakura Gakuin.
