Lahir di Jamaika pada 1960, reggae mulai berkembang menjadi salah satu roots musik tersohor di era tersebut. Sebut saja musisi seperti Jackie Mittoo dan Larry Marshall disebut sebagai pionir aliran musik itu.
Memasuki pertengahan era 60-an, muncul grup band The Wailers di mana ada sosok Bob Marley yang coba memberi sedikit modernisasi dari musik reggae. Hingga di era yang sama, Bob memilih jalan sendiri dan sukses melejitkan reggae lebih mendunia lagi.
Namun, seiring kematian Bob Marley musik reggae seakan tak 'ganas' seperti era kejayaannya dulu. Memang tak sedikit musisi reggae yang lahir, tapi tak sedikit juga musisi yang akhirnya hilang bak ditelan bumi.
Memasuki era modern saat ini, muncul beberapa nama seperti Snopp Dogg yang banting stir ke reggae dan berganti nama menjadi Snoop Lion. Ada juga Ziggy Marley yang sukses meraih Grammy Awards 2014 di kategori 'Best Reggae Album', serta tak ketinggalan grup band Magic!.
Nama terakhir yang belakangan mendapat sorotan lebih intensif di kancah musik dunia. Alasannya? Tak lain karena pemilihan reggae fusion yang membuat grup band asal Toronto, Kanada itu bisa lebih 'nge-pop' lewat alunan musik reggae.
Grup band yang digawangi oleh Nasri Atweh (vokal), Mark Pellizzer (Guitar), Ben Spivak (Bass) dan Alex Tanas (drum) menyebut musik reggae memang sudah 'meracuni' hidup mereka. Alhasil, musik mereka akan terasa akrab dengan kehidupan pendengarnya.
"Jika kalian mendengar musik Magic!, kalian akan mengetahui lebih tentang hidup kami," ucap sang vokalis, Nasri Atweh kepada Billboard beberapa waktu lalu.
