That was all this world was.

It took a vagarious group of craftsmen one month to survey the place; the diameter of the base floor was about 10 kilometers — large enough to fit the entirety of Setagaya-ku within. Above, there were 100 floors stacking straight upwards; its sheer size was unbelievable. It was impossible to even guess how much data it consisted of.

Inside, there were a couple of large cities along with countless small scale towns and villages, forests and plains, and even lakes. Only one stairway linked each floor to another, and the stairways existed in dungeons where large numbers of monsters roamed; so discovering and getting through was no easy matter. However, once someone made a breakthrough and arrived at a city of the upper floor, the «Teleport Gates» there and of every cities in the lower floors would be connected making it possible for anyone to move freely through these levels.

Kirito (キリト) is the main protagonist of the Sword Art Online series. His real name is Kirigaya Kazuto (桐ヶ谷和人). He was chosen as one of the 1000 beta testers for the Closed Beta of «Sword Art Online», the first ever VRMMORPG for the Nerve Gear. During SAO incident, he was a "solo" player, a player who hasn't joined a guild and usually works alone.

When it's announced that the players of Sword Art Online can no longer logout, he is surprised like everyone else, but unlike everyone else he quickly gets over it and accepts it, to an extent. He mainly uses a one-handed sword and usually wears all black in game, as it adds to stealth. He can also use two blades at once, a unique skill to him and he only uses it in emergencies to avoid attention for being one out of the two people to have unique skills. His game alias is Kirito, which is created by taking the syllables of the first and last Kanji of his real last and first names respectively: (Kirigaya Kazuto). In the real world, he lives with his mother and younger sister in a family consists of 3.

Asuna is a main heroine in this series and a sub-leader of the guild Knights of the Blood (KoB), a medium-sized guild of about thirty players, also called the strongest guild in Aincrad. Being tne of the few girls that are in SAO, and even more so that she's extremely pretty, she receives many invitations and proposals. She is a skilled player earning the title "Flash" for her extraordinary sword skill that is lightning fast. Her game alias is the same as her real world name.

A friendly player that meets Kirito at the start of the game and quickly befriends and learns from him. His game alias is Klein. He and Kirito later separate because he has friends who were also new to the game so he couldn't leave them. He survives for the past two years and managed to protect his friends the whole time, something Kirito regretted not doing. He is a katana user and the leader of the small guild Fuurinkazan who participates in the boss battles.

As one of the few people close to Kirito, he always keeps him in check and wants Kirito to survive the game.

Her game alias is Silica, a 13 years old and a middle level dagger user. She is a very cheerful and sweet girl.

She is one of the very rare 'Beast Tamers' in SAO. She has a very rare familiar a 'feathery dragon' that she named Pina after her cat in the real world. She treasured Pina a lot and was the reason she survived in the game. Aside from being a female player, she is also a Beast Tamer and thus perceived as an idol amongst the middle level players. She received endless invitations from parties and guilds who wanted an idol player to join them to get more fame. However, because of the attention she got, she became overly proud of herself and left a party one time after a misunderstanding. She got surrounded by monsters and lost Pina in the end. She was then rescued by Kirito who was passing by and helped her to resurrect the dead familiar.

She usually stays away from the males, who tried to marry her despite the fact that she was only 13. But, it appeared that she had feelings for Kirito.

Her game alias is Lisbeth, a mace wielder that runs a blacksmith shop in Aincrad on the 48th floor. She made Asuna’s rapier ‘Lament Light’ and one day got a request from Kirito to make him a sword with similar or better quality than his one handed long sword ‘Elucidator’ that he got from a monster drop. She told him that if she had the right materials she could make weapons that would break any sword, so they formed a party and went on a journey to find the material she needed. Because of that journey she came to the conclusion that she felt lonely and yearned for warmth, in the end he felt in love with Kirito, but she backed off because she knew that Asuna already had feelings for Kirito, before she meet him.

A merchant stationed at city Algate, located at the 50th floor of Aincrad. His game alias is Agil, and his shop motto is "Buy cheap and sell cheap".

He is 180cm tall, has dark complexion and has a rare hairstyle which is bald. He is also a very strong axe-wielding warrior in the frontlines. Kirito sometimes stays in his shop as sort of a disaster shelter, which he gets annoyed with but later ignores as Asuna also visits, which results in some publicity for his shop.

A young and cheerful girl with long black hair who looks no older than 10 years old. Kirito and Asuna found her in a forest in the 22nd floor of Aincrad. After taking care of her, she appears to have lost her memory. She calls Kirito and Asuna 'Papa' and 'Mama' due to having trouble pronouncing their names which is a side effect of the memory loss. They decided that they would go and search for her friends in the Starting City.

Her true identity is actually a players' self-regulation program for mental maintenance, Mental Health Counseling Program or MHCP. After being forbidden by the GM Kayaba Akihiko to come close to the players at the beginning of the death game, she was flooded with errors and broke down. In the process she became an AI that possesses actual intelligence.

When the Cardinal system governing SAO decided to erase her, Kirito turned her into a tear shaped crystal pendant. He actually converted her to a part of environmental data for the client program and was saved to his NERvGear's local memory.

In ALO, she was able to return to her normal form because ALO was based on a copy of the SAO server. She supports Kirito there as a Navigation Pixie. Kirito and Asuna still treat her as their daughter.

Sachi is a member of the guild «Black Cats of the Full Moon». All the members are actually computer research club members from the same high school in the real world except Kirito. She uses a two-handed long spear and her level is rather low compared to the rest of the guild members. She never intended to leave the Starting City but she did, knowing that she probably would die because she is afraid of monsters. According to Kirito, she and him are a lot alike and are both socially awkward, wall themselves in from people but fear loneliness.

Kayaba Akihiko a.k.a Heartcliff is the development director and GM (Game Master) of «Sword Art Online». He is also the designer of the «NerveGear» and the «VR Seed», as well as the main antagonist of the Sword Art Online Arc. He is also the owner of the unique skill "Holy Sword" and considered to be the strongest player in-game. He wields the one-handed sword and a tower shield collectively called as Liberator. He also was able to hold off the boss of the fiftieth level for ten minutes by himself, which earned him the title "Man of Legend". It is also rumored in SAO that Heathcliff's health has never gone into the yellow zone.

Kirigaya Suguha is raised with Kazuto as his sister. She is 15 years old and in her third year of junior high, as well as a member of the Kendo club. She's a diligent worker and has been practicing Kendo for 8 years.

In the VRMMO game Alfheim Online, she is known as Lyfa, a Sylph fairy. She stumbled onto Kirito by accident one night and decided to travel with him to the World Tree. She eventually fell in love with him because he showed that he really loves playing VR games as if living in it and is very honest in everything. In the real world she slowly got closer to her brother (actually a cousin) but because they're family and because he already got Asuna as a girlfriend she decided to give up on him and fall in love with Kirito instead.

The main villain in ALO arc. Originally, he is selected by Asuna's father to marry Asuna, he was adopted into her family on her father's wishes. He attended the same school with Kayaba Akihiko, who he viewed as a rival. During the Sword Art Online incident, he took advantage of the chaos to steal test subjects for research along with Asuna. In ALfheim Online he adopts the persona Fairy King, Oberon.

He is Lyfa's friend and mentor in ALfheim Online. He is skilled in concealment and high level dark magic. He harbors a crush on Suguha, being her classmate in real life.

a Sylph warrior in the VRMMORPG «ALfheim Online». He lost to Lyfa in the Sylph tournament yet he still retained high ambitions to hold power among the Sylph. He tries to stop Lyfa from going with Kirito to Aarun, and was prepared to battle Kirito but was stopped when his partner told him to stop because there were people looking and it would be a problem.
