"The only problem is still hosting and hosts"

About a week ago the new DotA team of Evil Geniuses was already undergoing a major change: JohnnyUtah is gone, Merlini joined to replace him. fragster tried to see behind the curtain and had a talk with Team EG's Jimmy 'Demon' Ho about the latest happenings, his team and about its chances and plans in the future.

Evil Geniuses had some roster changes recently when your former Captian JohnnyUtah had to leave the ship and Merlini joined. Can you tell us why that happened?

Demon: Not everything but a bit. Our management and JohnnyUtah had some technical difficulties so he was removed off then and of course Fear will step up as our new leader. Merlini has been progressing very well with our team lately. After a few talks with him and what his future with Ravens is going to be – he never actually confirmed being with them – so eventually he liked playing with us in our scrims and joined.

What do you mean with "technical difficulties"?

Demon: No comment.

Was it a management decision or was the team involved?

Demon: Our team had no part of it. As I already said our sponsor and Utah just didn't work out too well ...

What impact will the drop of Johnny have on your game? He was an outstanding player and his N'aix is feared among the top teams

Demon: Honestly, I think our team will still be on top. People say JohnnyUtah and Fear have the same skilled N'aix but I think Fear's N'aix is pubskilled. (laughs) Back on topic: Yes, Johnny was an outstanding player and all hope the best for him in the future but with the pickup of Merlini, I think our team won't have any problems in the near future.

Do you think that you can become the number one team in the world as Johnny promised it earlier in an interview on myEG.net?

Demon: I don't see why not. I mean we have all the talent needed. The only problem is still hosting and hosts. Seems like Americans have been making a huge impact since the American host bot came out and most of the time Europeans win on European host bots while Americans win on american ones.

It's just all about the ping?

Demon: Not exactly. It's more about who has a better strategy, mapcontrol and team work and other times it's about pings. (laughs)

Talking about pings brings us to LAN events where this problem isn't given. Hitomi already stated in an fragster interview that EG is going to attend many events. How are your plans on that?

Demon: We are attending Dreamhack in June and the Ravens LAN they are holding. And for the rest, I think we will show up at most of the upcoming LANs in the near future.

Recently the news popped up that the DotA tournament of the Experience is in danger because there are not many participating teams yet. Can you confirm your particiaption?

Demon: Yes.

What do you think about the new Ravens team and about Ks.int which seems to be a bit struggling with their latest changes?

Demon: Seems like Ks.int hasn't been doing so well lately with Hanni. Hanni has the same playstyle as KuroKy and that doesn't seem to fit really well with the team. As for Ravens, I think it's pretty much a new MYM lineup with new pickups and they have been doing quite well with their new roster. It was a good thing they let go of MiseRy, now it's a team with amazing players.

Could you describe your teammates in a few words?

Fear: This guy loves watching my amazing talent and cannot get over it. He likes it when I show off every game and can't get enough of it ... no, but really: Fear's probably the best picker and leader I've ever seen. Always making excellent judgements and all but when he feeds he goes emo and doesn't talk. (laughs)

hit0mi: He's been away for a while now so I'll comment him some other time, sorry Andre.

mO: Well, he's just black.

fanat1c: He is pretty funny with his whatever he is accent, it's sorta embarrassing if you ask me ... but he's a cool guy.

Merlini: Jeez this guy always tries to prove me wrong – even though most of the time I am right now. (laughs) He probably brings the team most of the laughters with his foolish suicides (EG vs. GM) and even jokes. Great player overall and probably funniest person to play with.

After EG disbanded there has been a rough time for the American DotA scene. How do you comment on a quote from DotA-Allstars forum, "American DotA - unstable since 1993", that was made after JohnnyUtah's drop?

Demon: I was on Check-Six at the time and I was not really playing much at the time. I understand what they mean by Americans being unstable because of how some teams just lose, get in a little girl fight and break up – that was kinda what happened with me and x6. I left due to losing too many matches and some other internal issues. Another issue why european DotAers have been talking a lot of **** about Americans like being unstable because they always have had a HUGE disadvantage since it would ALWAYS be a European host.

After x6 you decided to be part of these "European **** talkers" and teamed up with Rush3D for a while.

Demon: I wanted to try something new knowing every American team has been breaking up at the time, and Rush3D was at top at the time so I had a little talk with NS and he invited me.

And it didn't work out?

Demon: Yeah, it was a mistake. Playing on Russian hosts which would make me lag terribly.

What do you think about the upcoming Map 6.60? Made any experiences with it yet?

Demon: Nope, but I think everyone will be ready for a change!

Because?

Demon: New items/new hero(es)/maybe new map that may change competitve dota playstyle picks a bit so it seems fun! Also that new mode CD (Captains Draft) will get a lot of people playing a bit more competitively.
