    Default STOP GLOBAL WARMING

EARTH RELIES ON NATURAL GREENHOUSE GASES TO KEEP WARM TO SUPPORT LIFE.
NOW THE EARTH IS DYING FROM GLOBAL WARMING BECAUSE OF RAPIDLY RISING TEMPERATURE CAUSED BY TOO MUCH CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

    CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING
    1. excess release of CO2 and other greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuel, natural gas, coal, oil, and gasoline by power plants, automobiles, factories, and other human activities
    2. excess release of methane and nitrous oxide by extensive large scale agriculture and factory farming
    3. deforestation by non-sustainable commercial mass cutting down of forest trees, resulting in significantly less trees now to replace CO2 with oxygen
    4. population growth by increasing and continual human activities that releases even more greenhouse gases.

    EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING:
    1. Melting Of Polar Ice Glaciers
causes increasing number of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions in unexpected places; raises sea levels flooding coastalregions and contaminating fresh water supplies
    2. Significant Changes In Wind Patterns, Weather Patterns, And Climate
influences the length of seasons; causes more occurring floods, property damage, and death due to more frequent heavy rainfalls, fierce storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and typhoons
    3. Increased CO2
causes more acidic seawater threatining the survival of fish, coral reefs, and planktons; causes rapid increase in temperature
    4. Increased Air Temperature
causes reduced agricultured yields, hunger, and extinction of many endangered plant and animal species due to changed habitats; causes heat wave, fires, drought, and water scarcity; causes deserts to expand and snow to disappear in most places; expands the range and breeding grounds of diseases carried by animals and insects, increasing worldwide spread of disesases and death

    Spoiler untuk DOYOU KNOW :
    IT TAKES:
UP TO 12 YEARS FOR CIGARETTE BUTTS TO BIODEGRADE
10-20 YEARS FOR PLASTIC BAGS TO BIODEGRADE
100 YEARS FOR STYROFOAM CUPSTO BIODEGRADE
50-100 YEARS FOR ALUMINIUM AND TIN CANS TO BIODEGRADE
450 YEARS FOR SODA CANS PLASTIC CARRIERS TO BIODEGRADE
500-800 YEARS FOR DIAPERS & SANITARY PADS TO BIODEGRADE

REMEMBER 3R, REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE !!!

    Spoiler untuk STOP LITTERING :

    STOP LITTERING!
It smells, dirties, & harms the environment
it clogs the drains & water systems
    it causes flooding
    flooding carries diseases
    diseases cause sickness
    sickness causes death

    Only YOU can prevent litter!

Spoiler untuk PLANT a TREE :

Half the world's forests have already been cleared or burned, and 80% of the remaining have been seriously degraded. Help reduce GLOBAL WARMING! planting trees is the most effective and one of the cheapest ways for you to help balance the CO2 you generate daily.
WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT A TREE? A single tree absorbs about 1 ton CO2 during its lifetime, provides shade and releases water vapor, lowering air temperature and cooling the earth surface. Every tree reduces the greenhouse effect by giving off oxygen during photosynthesis and absorbing up to 60% CO2 and other air pollutants. Every tree provides enough for 3 people to beathe. A tree reduces topsoil erosion by capturing rainfall in its crown to slow down water run-off. Trees in forests store 50% of the world's carbon. Trees also reduce 50% of urban noise pollution by acting as a buffer

    LET'S PLANT A TREE

    [spoiler= SAVE THE TREES]
    USE LESS PAPER PRODUCTS!
paper manufacturing is the 3rd largest user of fossil fuels worldwide
7 million trees cut down every year just to make disposable tissues
    on average, a person uses 6 tissues a day, 2200 a year
use 1 less tissues a day, save 430.000.000 kg of paper waste
8.000.000.000 ATM receipts a year = more than 608.000.000 meters of paper = circling the earth more than 15 times
an average family uses 6 trees worth of paper a year
    6 rims A4 paper= 1 tree
recycling 54kg of newspaper = save 1 tree

    [spoiler]
    GIVE TREES A CHANCE!
    How can you help?
    print both sides
    print only what needed
    use paper only when needed
    reuse & recycle paper
    use less gift wrappings
    use less tissues

    Spoiler untuk SAVE ELECTRICITY :

    DID YOU KNOW?
40% of your home's electronic energy is used while your electronic devices are turned off, adding up to 10% of your electronic bill?

This is caused by "phantom power" sucking electricity from the wall socket.
Many electronic devices, appliances, power tools, cell phine chargers, and other gadgets draw power even when they're on standby, switched off or not in use, just by being plugged in.

    HOW DO YOU SAVE?
unplug devices when not in use or plug all devices into a power strip, then turn off the power strip with a single switch

Spoiler untuk replace your light bulbs :

    conserve energy

incandescent bulbs up to 90% electricity wated as heat, only 10% is visible light

compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) only use 25%-40% as much energy, last 10-15 times longer, release 70% less heat than incandescent bulbs

light emitting diodes light bulbs (LED) only use 10%-25% as much energy, last 100 times longer, and release minimal heat than incandescent bulbs

reduce global warming, turn off the lights when you leave the room, use only as much light as you need

Spoiler untuk REDUCE AIR CONDITIONER USAGE :

AC ACCOUNTS FOR 16% OF YOUR ELECTRIC BILL. Setting the temperature 2º warmer saves on your electric bill. Clean your AC once every 3-6 months, faster if AC in smoking room. Whenever possible, keep cool without AC:
strategically planting trees around the house reduces AC needs by 30%-58%; opening opposite end windows to pull out air throught the house improves cross ventilation; block sunlight during hot hours of the day with awnings, blinds, or curtains; use fans, which use only 3% of electricity, to move air throughout the house.

Spoiler untuk USE THE REFRIGERATOR WISELY :

refrigerator accounts for 15%-20% of your electric bill and it's the biggest energy-consuming kitchen appliance in a home, almost 5 times than the average television. Ideal freezer temperature is -18ºC to -15ºC. 10ºC cooler than the ideal settings uses 25% more electricity. placing refrigerator away from heat source and closing doors quickly, can saves electricity.

    Spoiler untuk CONSERVE WATER :

    save your water bills !!!
water is earth's most precious and non renewable resource

each shower uses 80-220 liters of water
turning off the water while soaping and shampooing uses only 11.5 liters of water
every two minutes of less shower saves up to 38 litres of water

each toilet flush uses 6-27 litres of water
dual flush toilet saves up to 200-310 litres of water a day
a leaking toilet wastes up to 340.000 litres of water a month

turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth saves up to 23 litres of water each day. Dripping faucet wastes up to 76 litres of water a day

Turning Off The WATER When You're Not Using It!!!

    Thumbs up

100 YEARS FOR STYROFOAM CUPSTO BIODEGRADE
    hey
i've heard that styrofoam need more than 100 million years to biodegerate

i'm curently studying at major DKV(desain komunikasi visua/ visual communication design)
and in the first year we R the major who spend most of the paper in the institute after architect> and i'm feeling real sorry about it. we could spend more than 200 paper in a day

here in bandung we don't need AC > it's cold already

so showers and toilet flushes = a great waste
    start using "gayung" guys!!!

i think this is the most difficult one.. in jakarta, one almost cannot withstand the heat.. papers can be replaced with computer nowadays.. but the AC? it has already become a need for people in the big city.

nah, I'm taking geography for my A-level subject, and ENHANCED global warming is one of the topics. So let me add some things that I have studied.
Causes for global warming are classified into two, natural and anthropogenic (caused by humans).
Naturally, the earth has been changing its climate since time immemorial (read: million years ago), alternating between glacial and interglacial period. Currently we are just in the beginning of the interglacial period, hence with time, the temperature of the earth is increasing. The last glacial peak (Ice Age) was some 18000 years ago. There are proofs / evidences for this theory, hence some people might say that this "global warming" is over hyped, and we should just not care about it because global warming is occurring naturally and whatever humanity does is less significant compared to the natural causes.
We should try to see things from different perspectives heh heh heh xD

    nice ..

so what you're trying to say is that global warming isn't caused by humans lack of care of our environment ?

yea... only the old AC make our ozon breaks... but modern AC is not breaking our ozon.... ^^

however Indonesia don't care about it... Due to economical condition....

this the fact of our country... who cares about ozon, if we keep comfortable with that old AC.... what a pity country...

no, humans are somewhat still responsible for enhanced greenhouse effect, that's why the proponents for global warming argue that we should cut our carbon emission, save electricity, ask the US to obey the Kyoto Protocol, and you know the rest of the story.

What I am trying to tell is that we should not eat wholesale what the news have been feeding us, and think about other possibilities. Nevertheless, it's still nice to know how the anthropogenic causes of enhanced greenhouse effect further aggravates the situation.

    1. There is indeed a correlation between the amount of CO2 level in the atmosphere and temperature. Buildup of CO2 increases our earth's temperature, and in turn increases the evaporation rate of the ocean. However, water vapour (H2O) is a gas that is even more effective at absorbing longwave radiation from the earth than anthropogenic trace gases (CO2 , Methane/CH4, N2O, and CFC) hence leading to even greater increase in temperature of the earth.
    2. The melting of ice causing more solar energy to be absorbed by the earth (water is less reflective than ice), this is why the countries near the poles feeling the greater impact of global warming than the countries in the equator.

On the other hand, there are negative feedback mechanisms that lower the earth temperature:
    1. As clouds are good reflectors of solar radiation, the increase in temperature would means more water evaporates and forms cloud in the atmosphere. Hence less solar radiation absorbed and this would lead to a decrease in the earth's temperature. I will let you do the research on how much this would decrease the temperature compared to the increase in temperature due to the greenhouse gases
    2. In fact, a lot of excess carbon dioxide released by humans enters the ocean. Rise in ocean temperature cause bloom in marine life, and photosynthesis by planktons and other marine plants may lead to the removal of large quantities of carbon which enters the ocean. As a result, the climate will cool due to the loss of the warming influence of this excess atmospheric carbon.

Phew, I just felt like writing a geography essay >.< sorry if there are many geographic terms here, I've already leaving a lot of the explanation for the claims above though. If you don't understand, please don't hesitate to ask. However, I'm leaving the conclusion to you of whether global warming is really significant / insignificant or occurs naturally or we should just not give a damn about it.

Modern Ac is not use the CFC... CFC makes a reaction in our ozone(O3).. the compositions of O3 are going to break and If I'm not wrong, O3 + CFC will become O2 or CO2 I forgot it... But the point is O3 has gone and it causes some hole in our ozone..

O3 decomposes into O2 if it reacts with CFC, the reaction is irreversible

just a little scrap from wikipedia.

Freon is duPont's brand name for CFCs, HCFCs and related compounds. Other commercial names from around the world are Algofrene, Arcton, Asahiflon, Daiflon, Eskimon, FCC, Flon, Flugene, Forane, Fridohna, Frigen, Frigedohn, Genetron, Isceon, Isotron, Kaiser, Kaltron, Khladon, Ledon, Racon, and Ucon.
and this is what we should know before

Since the late 1970s, the use of CFCs has been heavily regulated because of their destructive effects on the ozone layer. After the development of his electron capture detector, James Lovelock was the first to detect the widespread presence of CFCs in the air, finding a concentration of 60 parts per trillion of CFC-11 over Ireland.
Along with General Motors, DuPont was the inventor of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), and the largest producer of these ozone-depleting chemicals (used primarily in aerosol sprays and refrigerants) in the world, with a 25% market share in the late 1980s.
    a "great" company i think.

    what a good thread.

I'm currently in a committee of something like competition and the theme is eco industry.

What do you think about eco industry? do you think it is applicable in indonesia?

    Yes, stop global warming!

U know, yesterday i watched the newa, they said thousands people in Ancol throwed trash into the beach in the new year night. I thought they r very stupid, celebrated new year with destroying nature.
