Hyhy retires from DotA

Benedict 'Hyhy' Lim has always been a shining star of E-sports not only for Singapore but for Asia as a whole. His career dates back to Zenith's invincible era where the team managed to clinch gold at ESWC 2008, which was a major achievement during that point of time as no one in the world had expected that the Asians would come out on top in a european-infested tournament, with the odds stacked against them. Following the merge of Zenith and Kingsurf two years ago, Hyhy went on to lead Kingsurf to countless victories against strong opposition and today his glittering career comes to an end, with much to tell for it.


Hyhy has officially announced his retirement from the scene and has given possibly his last interview to tatazu.com. Below is the translated version of the interview for you provided specially for you by myMYM:

Hi Hyhy, everyone is shocked by your sudden retirement, can you tell us what prompted your decision?

Hyhy: Dota to me is just like studies. These few years DotA has taken away much of my personal time, and has always taken top priority in everything I do. Nevertheless these few years DotA has brought me much satisfaction and honour. But now I have begun to realise that I will not be able to devote as much time and passion to achieve the same kind of results in the past. Maybe this year the team will face some difficulties, but I have already decided to move on with life, and end the series of games once and for all. Afterall, DotA in Asia can only get you so much.

Was this decision made before or after SMM? Or was it due to some conflicts within the team?

Hyhy: Since WCG 2009, my team has always trained and prepared well, but we still eventually lose. Although we always feel that we should win, but DotA is truly a unpredictable game, it does not mean that if you have a good team you will definitely come out victorious. Since that time onwards I started to lose confidence in participating in further competitions. I would like to profess that SMM was my last chance to prove that the Asian continent was stronger than the European in DotA. In the end we only managed to get top eight, and did not send MYM home by our own hands. But I would like to think that every other asian team also had a share of the glory, just like how the asians managed to finished top at ESWC 2008. At this time there is no problem with the team, my teammates are perfect, they will do even better with my replacement.

After your retirement, will AEON.DotA disband as well? Or will Eryc find a new replacement?

Hyhy: Eryc's team will never disband, they will keep finding an ideal replacement for me. There are plenty of potential players to choose from the scene.

Do you have anything to say about SMM?

Hyhy: The truth is we were unable to obtain champion because we lacked two important players of our squad. The lucky thing was we managed to find replacements in time, we never thought that we would get champion because there was no time for us to gel. After we won EHome we were brimming with confidence, and are satisfied with our placing at top 8.

After Ks.Yamateh lost to sGty he changed his nick to ''ks.we will back', is there a possibility we will see hyhy back after a few years?

Hyhy: I am not in KS, I am in Aeon.Sg. I think Ks will come back and get champion. I only intend to participate in local competitions with my team should they need me. I do not wish to waste any more time on DotA, and if I am unable to keep up pace and skills with the team, then sharing of the prize money would be unfair for my teammates in the future.

Describe China Dota teams, which do you think is the strongest?

Hyhy: Before SMM, I thought that cD, CH and Ehome were the top three china teams, because they have been through intense training, every player has his own unique set of skills. Among the three I feel that CH is the strongest, because cD's playing style completely suits the current metagame, which is farming, and cD's farming skills are the most impressive. This was also the main reason why they were able to make it to the finals. On the other hand FTD was still a newly formed team prior to SMM, and are the dark-horses for this round of the tournament. In my opinion, their skills are not uncommon, but they eventually proved that they were able to come together to win SMM.

What do you forsee for DotA's future?

Hyhy: Eryc is the world's best manager. Tofu's passion towards the game was one of the key reasons why I kept pursuing this game as well. After all my years of playing, I would like to tell all my fans "I love you all!" I managed to win ESWC with my most beloved team, and you guys are my best friends in the gaming world. I definitely hope that this memory will last forever, and thanks for the interview.
