The BR 9F heavy freight locomotive was the final class of the BR standard series of steam locomotives. The first member of the class was unveiled in January 1954 and construction at Crewe and Swindon totalled 250 locomotives.


The final chapter of BR steam locomotive building was written at Swindon on March 18th 1960 when 92220 was painted Brunswick green and named Evening Star as a fitting tribute to the end of steam locomotive construction.

Today the Evening Star is preserved in the National Collection along with eight of her sister locomotives that provide spectacular sights on the preserved lines around Britain.
