Merlini quits competitive DotA

When one thinks of Merlini he or she probably thinks of his glory time in MYM as MYM|Merlini. of America Ben 'Merlini' Wu's DotA career stretched back all the way from 2007 when he won Dreamhack Summer with MeetYourMakers. Merlini initially did not buy the Warcraft III CD for the DotA map, where before his DotA days he was a Warcraft III ladder player in a team called Apex.

About half a year ago though, the American talent decided it was his queue and left the team to join a newly created team, together with his old teammate Fear, which would soon become one of the strongest teams in the DotA scene, Nirvana.Int.

His closest teammate, of America Clinton 'Fear' Loomis, considered Merlini as a sparkling light bulb in winter darkness and all of us who have played with him or heard him talking with commentators like MadMortigan would surely agree with Fear.

A short time ago, Fear talked to Merlini about his absence during some weeks. He stated the sparkling light bulb Merlini represented wasn't sparkling so much anymore. The reason why is not specified. However one could assume the television soap drama which has been going on in the team thus far could have contributed to this lack of activity from Merlini.

Merlini however stated that he couldn't stay in the team anymore or find a new place for competitive DotA.


Exclusive Statement from Fear:

Ben and I have been friends and teammates for over two and a half years, dating all the way back to when we were on MYM where we went to our first lan together, ESWC Grand Finals in San Jose. I remember him always starting smalltalk with complete strangers on the streets of San Jose and keeping everyone on the team joyfully amused with his witty intelligence. He has a powerful personality that just makes any team that much more lethal and not to mention outside of the game his personality is like a lightbulb burning bright in a vacant room on a winter's night. Unfortunately for Nirvana.int, that light bulb has flickered its last faint spark. I approached Ben regarding his absence from the team within the past few week to figure out what was going on and with hopes of changing it so we could be well-prepared for ESWC. Shortly after he informed me that he can't keep playing on the team and he doesn't want to go to ESWC because he needs to make preparations for real life arrangements of his

It was made perfectly clear that he was going to be leaving the team and quitting competitive DotA. We're sad to see him go and I am especially unhappy to see him leaving the scene. But who knows, maybe he will come back one day only time will tell.

I wish the best of luck to you Ben, and I hope everything goes better than according to plan so hopefully one day you can rejoin us again.

Exclusive statement from DeMoN:

Ben and I have been teammates for little over a year, and friends for over 2 years. It's very sad to see an extraordinary friend leave the scene. I've met this guy twice since he came to California, and has the exact personality as he does online. Which I thought was very amusing, since he is one of the most entertaining players I've played with. This is the guy that started my DotA Career, from watching his replays and made me idolize him. He has definitely inspired a lot of people and fans. Ben was always the star in MYM, in my opinion no matter what he did. It's very sad, because one of my DotA goals was to travel to a lan with him...which was suppose to be this upcoming ESWC.(The other was, being on the same team as him one day)

I also shotgunned a seat sitting next to him.. =( Most of my plays, and anything I did was because of Ben. I learned so much from this guy, from his juking, microing, & last hitting.

If it wasn't for Merlini, I'd probably still be stuck in public games on US BNet-WEST, or THR games. I would also like to say thank you for everything, for not only being a teammate but a friend when I needed one.

I'd like to also apologize for not being the same friend you were to me, I acted somewhat like a child for the past few days talking to you. I'm sincerely sorry for that.

I wish the best of luck to you Ben, in everything and your real life. I hope to see you back possibly sometime in the future, there will always be a spot here for you!

Rylai nya Merlini itu cukup Bagus walau bukan role nya....
Tapi emang situasi di Nirvana waktu itu emang lg shuffle role....
DeMon di plot untuk jadi Carry-Ganker dan late Carry....

Bukan Cuma Zeus nya...
Creep Pulling + Creep Stacking itu dia yg pertama kali develop, dan yang paling terkenal BeastMaster nya (Rexxar)...rata2 pub player itu satu wave creep cuma untuk satu camp netral creep...kalo merlini itu 1 wave creep untuk 3 camp netral....( 2 camp netral...1 nya di Stack)
blom lagi juking nya....itu juga disalutin...jgn Heran...RitteR sama Lakuci ngejadiin MYM|Merlini jadi Fave Player.

kl pada cukup old school seperti gw, sebenernya hal yg paling mengagumkan dari Merlini itu cara dia tau hal2 detail ttg dota dan gimana cara gunainnya.

seperti yg udah ksh tau diatas, dia tuh yg (afaik) pertama kali populerin creep pulling+stacking, rexxar jungling, dan abuse fog & terrain...

Dulu waktu pertama mulai liat dota, gw selalu fokus ke merlini krn gw tau gw bisa blajar banyak dari dia (bahkan sampe cara hero dia bergerak pun itu beda banget sama yg lain di masanya). Dan dari banyak hal yg gw blajar dari dia, salah satunya itu adalah gimana cancel spell animation lawan pake zeus (jurus kedua itu yg shortcutnya G; gw dah lupa namanya. lama ga main dota.. wkwkw).
Mungkin masih ada yg ga tau disini, tp beberapa spell hero itu punya animasi yg agak lamban, dan kalo kita cukup cepat kita bisa gagalin itu spell. Bukan cuma spell2 channeling gt lho, tp kyk spellnya THD (jakiro), clap atau ultinya Pandaren, bahkan sampe blinknya QoP bisa kita cancel kl timingnya tepat (dulu pertama kali liat dia gagalin tuh QoP, gw sampe ga percaya dan langsung gw ulang replaynya), dan gw juga masih inget satu kali dia pernah gagalin echo slamnya ES, pdhl itu ES ngeblink!!!

i'm going to miss him, tp melihat skrg dota emang lebih susah untuk main rambo dan selamat dg 10 HP seperti yg Merlini sering lakuin (yg membuat dia "dikomplain" sama Pusher) kyk dulu, mungkin emang udah saatnya Merlini retire dan go on with his real life..
