the only thing that i can think of is that, they start to learn English in Junior High which i would say is kinda late. They tend to think that English is difficult so they dont even bother to learn since it is not important for them anyway especially for those that are not going overseas for further studies.
its good to learn it in the earlier age, or maybe we can use English as the primary language at home when we have kids (this is what i plan to do in the future LOL)

and schools arent helping at all. Most teachers from junior high to university even, only teach their students grammar and never how to put it in to practice. This results in misconceptions of how this beautiful language is spoken. Which really is a shame.

My teacher is an exception. She taught students conversations, and how to listen to different dialects. Not only the formal ones but also the more casual and informal languages. Not counting the various accents I was taught with.

This thread makes me giggle and squirm at the same time. I used to think like our Topic Starter, but I learned to just let go. I used to be even worse, as far as being called a "Grammar Nazi" by a few close friends, since I would correct them if their sentence structure, intonation, grammar, or phrasing of any English word is wrong. I still have this tick every time a few friends try to say things in English, but I laugh it off, and I can put two and two together and understand what they mean. Sometimes I'd double check for them and correct them in a joking manner, but it's all in good fun. Best way to learn English in my opinion, is actually to take a crash course for a prolonged period of time, and stay in an environment where all they speak is that particular language. Hell, that's what happened to me, and listen/read to me speak/type in fancy-schmancy English words.
