Unable to start up 3D acceleration
If you are receiving the message World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3D acceleration or Failed to find a suitable display device when attempting to load the game, please check through the following steps:
1. Minimum requirements
Make sure that your system meets or exceeds the minimum requirements. You will also need to ensure that your graphics device is supported, our Video Hardware Compatibility page lists all supported (and unsupported) devices. If you're unsure as to what graphics device is in your system, this page should help.
If your system does not meet the minimum system requirements, we unfortunately cannot support the game on your system.
If your system does meet the minimum requirements please try the additional troubleshooting steps below.
2. DirectX
Outdated, missing or corrupt DirectX files can cause this error to appear. Try updating your DirectX files to the very latest available from Microsoft.
3. Device drivers
Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your graphics, sound and motherboard (chipset) devices. Information on how to identify your graphics and sound can be found here, and a list of links to common drivers here.
When updating any device drivers, it's generally good practice to first uninstall the old driver fully before installing the newest.
4. Windows updates
Check that your version of Windows is fully updated, particularly that you have the latest Windows Service Pack installed. Visit the Windows Update page to check your version of Windows.
5. Overclocking
World of Warcraft attempts to use your hardware to it fullest. If you overclock your hardware in any way, even if other applications on your computer are stable, it may cause problems with World of Warcraft. Please set all your components to their factory default speeds while playing World of Warcraft.
6. Background applications
A program running in the computer's background could be causing issues. We'll want to have you try closing all background applications as explained on our support site here.
7. OpenGL
Try running the game in OpenGL mode by following these steps:
Open the World of Warcraft folder on your hard drive
Open the WTF folder
Open the Config.wtf file (if prompted, select a program from the list and choose WordPad)
At the bottom of the files, add the line: SET gxAPI "OpenGL"
Close the file and Save the changes
You can return the graphics to normal by removing the SET gxAPI "OpenGL" added above.
