Tim (Rudd) is an executive, who after acquiring a negotiation over special novelty lamps with Mueller (Walliams), Fender (Greenwood) invites him to a "dinner for winners" in which he must find an eccentric person with a special talent to bring to a dinner, the winner earns a trophy and the executive that brought him gets glory. He soon learns it is more of a "dinner for idiots". Meanwhile, his girlfriend Julie (Szostak) is getting a curator deal for Keiran Vollard (Clement), and Tim once again fails to get a proposal in, and Julie forces him not to attend the dinner.
The next day, he accidentally hits Barry (Carell) with his car when he tries to retrieve a dead mouse on the road, and Tim realizes Barry is who he needs for the dinner, and when he comes to his apartment, Barry accidentally draws Darla (Punch), an old flame of Tim's who is stalking him, and gives her his address. When Tim realizes this, Barry attempts to send away Darla, but accidentally sends Julie away instead, hurting their relationship, and causing him to try to chase her down to Vollard's ranch, where he accidentally offends Barry (which further hurt his and Julie's relationship), but he makes amends and they go to the dinner with Mueller, after a disastrous lunch that morning.
Barry's rival Thurman (Galifianakis), however, is one of the idiots and outcasts and he is about to win. After that, Tim tells Barry everything, and after some encouragement, gets Barry to win, before causing his boss and fellow executives to reveal the truth and cause havoc. Tim is fired, as is Julie after Vollard realizes it would be a problem to have her. In the end, Tim marries Julie, Barry gets in a relationship with Darla and hosts a monthly "breakfast for champions" for all of the "losers", and Thurman gets a new book in the mental hospital, as well as Tim getting a new museum started in Switzerland for Mueller. After the credits, it is revealed Fender's company has gone under and Forbes Magazine has named him the "World's Biggest Loser."
