A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a civil war rages between forces of the resolute Rebel Alliance and the formidable Galactic Empire as a result of galactic-wide trade disputes. Star Wars Galaxies is a sci-fi MMORPG initially released as Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. This MMOG’s world consists of ten different planets, each one a 16 km x 16 km map and borrowed from the known fictional Star Wars universe with a timeline set between the Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back movies. Star Wars Galaxies features content both mentioned and not mentioned in various Star Wars media. During character creation, players may choose from ten different species and nine different primary professions, all of which are mentioned in various Star Wars media.

As with many MMOs, players of Star Wars Galaxies can use their character’s skills and special abilities to attack targets, complete quests/missions, craft useful items, and/or entertain other players. During their adventures throughout the galaxy, characters will have the opportunity to meet famous Star Wars NPCs, travel in their own landspeeders, speeder bikes or swoops, control economies, earn fame and fortune (or infamy and notoriety), obtain rare items, artifacts and trinkets, and build, own and decorate their own structures, including houses, cantinas and guild halls. These structures can even be organized into entire cities run by players. There have been three expansions since Star Wars Galaxies’ initial release (Jump to Lightspeed, Rage of the Wookies, and Trials of Obi-Wan), all of which have added additional features to the main game.

In the future, crossing the cosmic and spectacular expanse of space instantaneously becomes a reality. Stargate Worlds is a science fiction MMORPG based on the hugely popluar Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis TV series. Its development company, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, is a new kid on the block, but its team of industry veteran members posses a good deal of experience, having collectively shipped over 80 game titles. Stargate Worlds focuses on squad-based ranged combat and utilizes modern and science fiction weaponry, cover and terrain, but also offers a non-combat experience in the forms of detailed crafting and construction gameplay.

Being in the final stages of pre-production until probably late spring, little is known about Stargate Worlds. What is known is that playable areas in the MMO are based on both historical and fictional human time periods, alien environments, and interstellar space locales. Also, the choice to play as one of the ‘Big Four’ races within the Stargate Universe (Human, Jaffa, Goa’uld or Asgard) is planned and the MMOG will adhere to the backstory of the TV series, with players affecting future stories.

Storyline
Starport is a massively-multiplayer game designed for hundreds of simultaneous human players in the same world, connected by the internet. Set in "the golden age of galactic colonization," players compete against each other, and in cooperation, to achieve the most illustrious career as a starship captain. Starport is unique among massively-multiplayer games in that it is winnable. Each game world lasts for two weeks and features player rankings that show which players and teams are doing the best. According to Playtechtonics president and lead designer Aaron Hunter, "the winnable nature of the game adds a strong element of strategic gameplay, something that hasn’t been explored enough in the genre of online games. Player and team motivations are much more well-defined."

Starport's sales strategy is also new and exciting. Instead of charging players subscription fees to play like most online games, Starport is free. The game software can be downloaded directly off the internet and one can be playing in a Starport game world in a matter of minutes. The developers intend to make their money through a game feature called "The Admiral's Club." At this location in the game, customers can use their credit card to purchase extra resources for their character. "We wanted to do something for the players, and make some waves with this game," said Aaron. "The great thing about making payment optional to players, is that it allows all classes of gamers to participate, from the teenager with a tiny allowance to the high-powered Manhattan lawyer."

Welcome to the 23rd century.

In StarQuest Online, you can assume the persona of a character living, exploring, fighting, and possibly dying in this future world. As an intrepid fleet officer, swashbuckling pirate, devious smuggler, deadly bounty hunter, or ordinary civilian you and players like you will shape this world and its history into whatever you make of it. The designers of StarQuest Online have created the starting point, it is up to you to bring the world to life.

StarQuest Online takes place beginning in the dawning years of the 23rd century in our own Milky Way galaxy. At the time this manual was written, the StarQuest game year was 2212 A.D. Time passes in the StarQuest universe approximately four times as fast as time in the real world, therefore one year in StarQuest time is three months of real world time. These numbers are of course based on the Terran (Sol III) calendar, other civilizations may have differing calendars. For example, in the Therataan Protectorates the current year is 11679, and the Therataan year is 277 Terran days long. A Therataan day is 29 Terran hours long. The Terran calendar has been adopted for general use in the UNITED SYSTEMS ALLIANCE (see below) and will therefore be the system most encountered by players.

Currently the known galaxy is dominated by three major powers. The THERATAAN PROTECTORATES, the KLINSHAYA EMPIRE and the UNITED SYSTEMS ALLIANCE are all located with 200 light years of one another and have been interacting in one form or another for centuries.
