Real Madrid’s Christoph Metzelder has returned to the training pitch as he speeds up his recovery from injury.
The German defender sustained a nasty injury to his left foot in December and he had to undergo surgery in February. He has now returned to work on the pitch with club doctor Jose Luis San Martin.
The stopper completed a range of different exercises as well as work with the football. So far the recovery and treatment have been going to plan and it seems as if the defender will be able to return for selection in Bernd Schuster’s side for the final games of the La Liga season.
Thirteen Real Madrid players are away on international duty for all the various friendlies midweek and the players who are not away with their national sides will take part in regular training on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Merengues.
No doubt Schuster will be hoping he can have Metzelder back as soon as possible given Los Blancos' recent dire performances at the back.
Some extremely poor defender saw Real lose 3-2 at home against Valencia on Sunday night. The gap between themselves and the trailing Barcelona at the top of La Liga is just four points. Real are only too aware that any more slip ups could put their title hopes on the line, no doubt Metzelder will provide some reassurance when he returns.
