Item Effects on Images
The following is an attempt to answer people's questions about what to buy for imager heros into one topic. These heros include terrorblade, naga siren, phantom lancer and chaosknight.
Some items and orb effects work on images. Some do not. Therefore to maximise the potential of your imager hero it pays to do some research. If you build your imager hero right they are amongst the most powerful late game heros in Dota. If not you will just have one relatively weak hero that can only use their images for distraction purposes.
I intend to update this page as more information comes to hand so any comments, corrections and information appreciated!
Note: This is a repost of my earlier topic in the Strategy:Miscellaneous Guide section at the suggestion of a Dota Questions moderator as it better belongs in this section.
Item Effects
The following items and effects DO work on images
Stat bonus items. Images gain hit points from strength, armour and attack speed from agility, and bonus to damage from your primary stat. I believe they also gain hitpoint and mana regeneration from stats as well.
Feedback (Diffusal Blade/ Manta Style). Only works on melee images. Ranged images do not burn mana.
Critical Strike (Crysallis / Buriza ). Just the critical strike ability is transferred to images not the bonus damage from the item.
Evasion (Butterfly, Radiance)
Raw movement speed gain items (Boots, Treads, Teleboots)
% Movement Speed gain items (Sangeyasha, Yasha).
True Sight (Gem of True Sight)
Radiance burning aura (Radiance) - Note that while images get the burning aura only one such aura will apply to an enemy at a given time (i.e. 4 images do not mean 4xdamage from the burn aura). Also note that only the aura damage and evasion bonus transfers to images. The bonus damage from the Radiance item itself does not transfer.
Direct Hit Point bonus items (Vitality Booster, Point Booster, Soul Booster, Heart of Tarresque, Manta Style)
Direct Mana Point bonus items (Energy Booster, Point Booster, Soul Booster, etc)
The following items and effects do NOT work on images (despite what the attack animation might suggest!)
Direct bonus to damage items (i.e. items that say +x to damage do not give that bonus damage to images)
Direct bonus to armour items (Chainmail, Platemail, Aegis etc). Note: Java's Premium Naga Siren Guide says the opposite so I am prepared to be corrected on this point!
Direct regeneration items (Ring of Regen, Ring of Health etc)
Increased Attack Speed percent (Hyperstone, Treads, Hand of Midas, Monkey King Bar, Butterfly)
Lifesteal (Satanic, Mask of Madness, Mask of Death, Helm of Dominator)
Frost Attack (Eye of Skadi)
Chain Lightning (Maelstrom)
Cleave - Percentage Splash Damage applied to nearby targets (Battlefury)
Bash - % chance to stun (Cranial Basher). To be precise it is a bit more complicated than just saying it doesn't work - see notes below.
Maim (Sange, Sangeyasha)
% Chance for Microstun that disrupts concentration spells and gives bonus damage (Monkey King Bar)
Corruption effect - minus to armour upon hit (Stygnian Desolator). Bear in mind however the images will benefit from the corruption given by your main hero so it's still a decent option
Return damage % from melee attackers (Blademail)
Damage block (Kraken Shell, Stout Shield, Vanguard)
Spell items - images can't cast spells (Dagon, Ginsoo, Mechanism, Mantastyle, BKB etc)
Magic resistance items (Planewalker Cloak, Aegis) - images only get innate hero resistance.
The following items have not yet been tested. Please advise if you test any of these out (include details of the test you carried out to prove it). Note: most of the below are auras but you should note that the image showing the aura icon or visual effect is NOT the same thing as it actually working on the image. The image will always show the aura icon regardless
Spell block (Linkens)
Lifesteal Aura (from Leoric or Vladmir's Offering)
Devotion Aura (Ring of Basilus or Vladmir's Offering)
Brilliance Aura (Crystal maiden, Ring of Basilus or Vladmir's Offering)
Toughness Aura (Sven)
Healing Aura (Headress of Rejuvenation, Mechanism)
Mechanism Heal Activation Effect
Arcane Ring Mana Charge Activation Effect
Buckler Activation Effect
Attack Speed Buff Aura (Assault Cuirass)
Extra note on bashing with images
If you want precise details on how bashing with images doesn't work see this quote below from Malle.
QUOTE
Illusions can bash, but it works in a really strange way. First of, they won't deal any bonus damage.
Secondly, if an image bashes a target, it will only be a fake bash. Everything will look as it would if a real hero bashed the target, but the target can still move and attack. If a real hero bashes the target while he is in such a "Fake bash state", the fake bash state will be prolonged. Vice versa, if a hero makes a real bash on the target, and an image bashes the target, the real bash will be prolonged.
I also believe that fake bashes do not interrupt channelling spells but I am awaiting confirmation of that.
Example Items for specific heros
Since I prefer not to merely give out information without at least a few examples on how to apply it I have included my favourite items for the main imager heros below. Note these are just lists of items I buy - they are not an ordered build! Also note these are just a few helpful item notes to act as a starting point for you, they are not intended as a strategy guide. For actual guides on these heros see the Strategy forum.
Naga Siren, Phantom Lancer (Agility Melee Imagers)
teleboots
mantastyle
linkens sphere
butterfly
radiance (images don't get the bonus damage but do get the burn aura!)
optional wraith bands at start
The combo of stat gain items, maximum move speed (since percent attack bonus doesnt work on images), and feedback (which works on melee images) is a combo that makes for an awesome hero killer mid-late game. With this build you are shooting for a diffusal then mantastyle as quickly as possible since your power grows massively when you complete it. Note that for Phantom Lancer the images from Manta Style do multiply like his normal spawned images so its a good way of getting your image spam going for that hero. If you are a skilled "last hitter" you can get away without regen often but with a decent nuker in your lane a ring of health may be required. Wraith bands can be a way of giving your more hp and damage for both you and your images if you having real trouble surviving.
Also a tip for Phantom Lancer - I find it pointless getting his images early since they die in one hit before they have a chance to multiply. I find it a better option to get a rank in dopplewalk at level 1 then max the spirit lance asap and save the image skill till mid game when I have my diffusal. Having a nuke and dopplewalk early game will get you more respect from your opponent and gives you the opportunity for an early kill or two (dopplewalk in, make your image attack them, make them them waste their nuke on the image then lance them and kill).
Terrorblade (Agility Hybrid Imager)
teleboots
skadi
butterfly
linkens
radiance (images don't get the bonus damage but do get the burn aura!)
optional wraith bands at start
optional mantastyle if game goes too long (basically by doing this you are sacrificing the frost effect to get 2 more base wrecking images).
Once again note I have gone all stat items. Since Terrorblade spends most of his key moments in ranged form rather than melee form I have chosen skadi's frost attack as his orb effect rather than feedback (since mana burn does not work on ranged images). The frost does not apply to images but frost on the main terrorblade hero allows the images to smack the fleeing hero and the stats from skadi will give the images a great boost in hp, damage and attack speed. I generally buy boots first up, get a couple of wraith bands then farm hard for the skadi. I use level 1 soul steal to keep my hp at a reasonable level. After the skadi I complete the teleboots then my butterfly. If you complete the butterfly and the game is not yet over you will be very strong indeed and in most circumstances be able to level their base in seconds. Radiance doesn't buff your images direct damage but they do get the burn aura so its a good one to consider as a later item after skadi and butterfly. If however they still somehow manage to hold you out look at a manta style as a way of getting another couple of images into the mix. Be aware that it will override your frost effect but at this point in the game that is probably ok as frost orb effect is pretty useless when you are pushing their base anyway.
The above build is what I call the ranged imager build for Terrorblade. The focus is clearly on making a base leveler hero that is close to impossible to stop on pushes later game.
He can also however be played with an earlier game assassin build using lothar's edge and dagon. What you do is you go to roshan or one of the ancient creep camps and get your hp really low. You then windwalk behind a full hitpoint enemy using the lothar's edge, sunder them to swap hitpoints percentages with them and immediately dagon blast. This should kill most heros instantly. Not a build you want to use if their team has a bloodseeker, or if they have a windwalker such as sa, clinks or bounty hunter as they might spot you on route to your victim and kill you before you can sunder. It's also only viable in public games - it will rarely work in an inhouse game.
Chaos Knight (Strength Melee with Image Ultimate)
Chaos Knight doesnt get images often enough to justify a specific orb effect for images in my humble opinion. Having said that I do tend to buy gear for him that assists his images. Strength gear such bracers, sangayasha/satanic, heart etc and other misc gear such as Radiance which work on images can all make a big difference to his ult rather than mkb burize etc which have little effect on images. Mantastyle is an option for Chaos Knight as it makes his ultimate awesome however his ult has a big cooldown so I personally don't think much of it. Give them all a go and see what works best for your play style.
Spectre (Agility Melee with Image Ultimate)
Spectre's Ultimate "Haunt" also works as an image. The damage your haunt images do is subject to the image rules above meaning only stat damage is granted, radiance aura will work, feedback is the only orb effect that will function etc. However most people use the ultimate for a free teleport to a low hp fleeing target so this observation is not going to affect what people buy for spectre in most circumstances.
