letaknya masih misterius, tp beberapa ilmuwan berpendapat letaknya berada di samudra atlantik dan ada juga yg mengatakan letaknya berada di indonesia.

THIS is the amazing image which could show the fabled sunken city of Atlantis.

It shows a perfect rectangle the size of Wales lying on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 3½ miles down.

A host of criss-crossing lines, looking like a map of a vast metropolis, are enclosed by the boundary.

And last night the possibility of an extraordinary discovery had oceanographers and geophysicists captivated.

The site lies 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands — a location for Atlantis seemingly suggested by the ancient philosopher Plato.

He believed it was an island civilisation sunk by an earthquake and floods around 9,700BC — nearly 12,000 years ago.

The “grid” showed up on Google Ocean, a Google Earth extension that uses a combination of satellite images and marine surveys.

Last night Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University — and one of the world’s leading authorities on Atlantis — called it “fascinating”.

He said: “The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato. Even if it turns out to be geographical, this definitely deserves a closer look.”

The legend of Atlantis has captured the imagination of scholars for centuries.

And in the 1970s it spawned a hit TV series, Man From Atlantis, in which Patrick Duffy played a webbed hero who could live underwater.

Situated in an area called the Madeira Abyssal Plane, the grid was spotted by aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford as he browsed through Google Ocean.

Bernie, 38, of Chester, said: “It looks like an aerial map of Milton Keynes. It must be man-made.”

Google today claimed the criss-crossing lines were sonar data collected as boats mapped the ocean floor.

But the internet giant said “blank spots” within the lines could not be explained.

A spokeswoman said: “Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor.

“The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.

“The fact that there are blank spots between each of these lines is a sign of how little we really know about the world’s oceans.”

The network of criss-cross lines is 620 miles off the coast of north west Africa near the Canary Islands on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.

The perfect rectangle – which is around the size of Wales – was noticed on the search giant's underwater exploration tool by an aeronautical engineer who claims it looks like an "aerial map" of a city.

The underwater image can be found at the co-ordinates 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W.

Last night Atlantis experts said that the unexplained grid is located at one of the possible sites of the legendary island, which was described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

According to his account, the city sank beneath the ocean after its residents made a failed effort to conquer Athens around 9000 BC.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University told The Sun that the find was fascinating and warranted further inspection.

"The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato," the Atlantis expert said. "Even if it turns out to be geographical, it definitely deserves a closer look."

Bernie Bamford, 38, of Chester who spotted the "city", compared it to the plan of Milton Keynes, the Buckinghamshire town built on a grid design. "It must be man made," he said.

Google Ocean, an extension of Google Earth, allows web users to virtually explore the ocean with thousands of images of underwater landscapes.

Launched earlier this month, it lets users swim around underwater volcanoes, watch videos about exotic marine life, read about nearby shipwrecks, contribute photos and watch unseen footage of historic ocean expeditions.

The legend of Atlantis has excited the public imagination for centuries. In recent years "evidence" of the lost kingdom has been found off the coast of Cyprus and in southern Spain.

Plato described it as an island "larger than Libya and Asia put together" in front of the Pillars of Hercules - the Straits of Gibraltar. He said Atlantis was a land of fabulous wealth, advanced civilisation and natural beauty destroyed by earthquakes and floods 9,000 years earlier.

INILAH.COM, Jakarta - Berkat Google Earth, sebuah peta di dasar laut mirip reruntuhan kota berhasil ditemukan. Pola ini diperkirakan adalah Atlantis, negeri yang pernah jaya ribuan tahun lalu. Tapi ternyata meleset. Mungkin Atlantis ada di Indonesia seperti diperkirakan ilmuwan Brasil.

Pengguna Google Earth yang bisa menelusuri seluruh muka bumi, menemukan sesuatu yang luar biasa. Sebuah pola seperti jalanan kota ditemukan di dasar laut lepas pantai sebelah barat pantai Afrika. Jalanan sepanjang 10 mil ini diyakini sebagai lokasi Atlantis yang menghilang ribuan tahun lalu.

Tapi penemuan itu ternyata mengecewakan banyak orang. Ilmuwan di Google mengatakan bukan Atlantis. Mereka mengatakan pola itu terbentuk karena pantulan dari perangkat yang digunakan. Selain deviasi kedalaman air juga bisa menghasilkan jejak seperti itu.

Google mengatakan pola serupa bisa ditemui di seluruh dasar lautan, termasuk lautan di wilayah Pacifik di sebelah utara Hawaii. Sejak Google Earth memiliki fitur Ocean, jutaan orang mulai mengeksplorasi lautan. Kebanyakan terkejut dengan apa yang berhasil ditemuinya. Seperti di dekat Hawaii ternyata terdapat pulau vulkanis yang disebut Loihi Seamount.

Selain itu juga bisa diketahui terdapat pegunungan di bawah laut di Laut Atlantik dimana patahan tektonik bergeser secara berlawanan, di wilayah Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Jika diamati lebih jauh, pegunungan itu tersambung dengan yang lainnya di seluruh muka bumi dan membentuk panjang hingga 60 ribu kilometer.

Cerita mengenai Atlantis terus menjadi misteri sejak digambarkan filosof Plato lebih dari 2000 tahun lalu. Ia menggambarkan Atlantis sebagai kota yang memiliki kebudayaan tinggi, serta alamnya sangat indah.

Dalam catatannya, Plato menulis Atlantis terhampar di seberang pilar Herkules dan memiliki angkatan laut yang menaklukan Eropa Barat dan Afrika 9000 tahun sebelum waktu Solon, atau sekitar tahun 9500 SM. Setelah gagal menyerang Yunani, Atlantis tenggelam ke dalam samudera hanya dalam waktu satu hari satu malam.

Atlantis umumnya dianggap sebagai mitos yang dibuat Plato untuk mengilustrasikan teori politik. Kisah Atlantis kurang diketahui pada Abad Pertengahan, namun, pada era modern, cerita mengenai Atlantis ditemukan kembali.

Deskripsi Plato menginspirasikan karya-karya penulis zaman Renaissance, seperti New Atlantis karya Francis Bacon. Atlantis juga mempengaruhi literatur modern, dari fiksi ilmiah hingga buku komik dan film. Namanya telah menjadi pameo untuk semua peradaban prasejarah yang maju dan hilang.

Penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Arysio Santos mendapatkan hasil yang mengejutkan. Ia menyebut Atlantis ada di wilayah Indonesia. Ia menuliskan penemuannya itu dalam buku Atlantis, The Lost Continent Finally Found, The Definitive Localization of Plato’s Lost Civilization (2005).

Atlantis adalah sebuah pulau atau benua yang disebut pertama kali oleh Plato pada karya dialognya yang berjudul Timaeus dan Critias pada 360 sebelum Masehi. Dialog Critias mengandung sangat banyak keterangan deskriptif tentang ciri-ciri Atlantis.

Kurator Akeologi sejarah di Universitas New York yang paling banyak mempelajari Atlantis, Charles Orser menyebut penemuan Google Earth itu sangat luar biasa. “Ini pertamakalinya lokasi yang paling kuat mengenai Atlantis seperti digambarkan oleh Plato. Ini layak untuk diteliti lebih jauh,” katanya

Ia menambahkan Atlantis merupakan salah satu tujuan utama arkeologi di dunia. Jika Atlantis ditemukan, maka akan menjadi pencapaian terbesar sepanjang sejarah. Peter Birch, Product Manager Google Earth mengatakan sudah banyak penemuan hebat Google Earth.

Misalnya saja hutan perawan di Mozambique jajaran karang di pantai Australia, serta sisa pemukiman Romawi Kuno. Tapi mengenai peta bawah laut yang diperkirakan sebagai Atlantis adalah salah.

Untuk kasus itu, Birch mengatakan user melihat jejak proses pengumpulan data. Bathymetric (permukaan dasar laut) sering dikumpulkan dari perahu menggunakan sonar untuk mengukur dasar laut. “Garis merefleksikan jalur perahu saat mengumpukan data," katanya. Mungkin Atlantis memang berada di Indonesia seperti diperkirakan oleh Santos. Pada situs webnya atlan.org ia mengungkapkan, pada masa lalu itu Atlantis merupakan benua yang membentang dari bagian selatan India, Sri Lanka, Sumatera, Jawa, Kalimantan, sampai ke wilayah timur.

Teori Plato menerangkan bahwa Atlantis merupakan benua yang hilang akibat letusan gunung berapi yang secara bersamaan meletus. Di antaranya letusan yang paling dahsyat adalah gunung Krakatau.

Santos membandingan, sistem pesawahan yang khas Indonesia, diadopsi oleh Candi Borobudur, Piramida di Mesir, dan bangunan kuno Aztec di Meksiko. Santos melakukan penelitian selama 30 tahun untuk menghasilkan kesimpulannya itu.

Ia mengungkapkan 33 perbandingan, seperti luas wilayah, cuaca, kekayaan alam, gunung berapi, dan cara bertani, yang akhirnya menyimpulkan bahwa Atlantis itu adalah Indonesia. [E1]
