Thumbs up Guide Leshrac the Malicious, The Tormented Soul

A Guide to Leshrac the Malicious, The Tormented Soul

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This strategy guide introduces the average Leshrac player to a whole new level and style of playing him. It explains a more unconventional strategy and does not cover other types of play-styles extensively. However, do remember that the strategy is not exclusive and can be and should be tweaked depending on the game situations.

Leshrac the Malicious, The Tormented Soul
Leshrac the Malicious - The Tormented Soul
    Range: 600 | | Move Speed: 300 | Primary: INT
    Str: 14 + 1.5 | Agi: 13 + 1.7 | Int: 26 + 3
    Damage: 45 - 49 | HP: 416 | Mana: 338
    HP Regen: 0.67 | Mana Regen: 1.05
    Attack Speed: 1.48 (+ 13% IAS) | Armor: 0.8

    Points to note:

-You have 600 range. Use it to your advantage to harass enemy heroes.

-This guide focuses largely around Diabolic Edict and Pulse Nova.

-Your primary farming tool will be Diabolic Edict.

-You will be very fragile when playing this guide, as it does not go for any major hp-adding items.

-It helps to play defensive, and standing nearer to the front only when farming with Diabolic Edict. Never chase down an enemy hero past a tower.

-While I often advocate not chasing enemy heroes, this strategy warrants some forms of chasing. Hence, it'll take some intuition and skill to judge whether or not to continue a chase.

-You can rape most heroes 1 on 1, and when moving around in a group, you rape too due to Pulse Nova and Split Earth.

-There is counters to this guide (such as high hp tanks). It's not a 100% invincibility guide. Some counters and protective measures will be covered later in the guide.

-This strategy requires intense micro-management and finger/keyboard dexterity. This is mainly attributed to the fact that you need to spam your hotkeys, on both item and skills fast. And as the game progresses, you'll have possibly 3 to 4 item hotkeys to deal with, in addition to your normal skill hotkeys!

-There is no level requirements for items. Simply because my skills level is different from yours, and my games are different from yours and the enemy's always vary in skill. EVERYTHING is so unpredictable, I don't see any reason why I should make a guide and impose level requirements. I don't even get my items at standard rate in different games anyway
    to get certain items.

Now we're at the core of the hero. And if you haven't completed reading the section, Points to Note, please get back up there and read it!

    Split Earth:
Splits the earth under your enemies feet. Deals damage and stuns for a short duration.

Level 1 - Deals 70 damage and stuns for 1.25 second. 150 AoE
Level 2 - Deals 140 damage and stuns for 1.5 seconds. 175 AoE
Level 3 - Deals 210 damage and stuns for 1.75 seconds. 200 AoE
Level 4 - Deals 290 damage and stuns for 2 seconds. 225 AoE.
    Mana Cost: 100/ 125/ 140/ 160
    Cooldown: 10

    Diabolic Edict:
Saturates the area around Leshrac with magic, causing random explosions to enemies. AoE of 500.
    Lasts 8 seconds.
Deals physical damage and works on buildings.
If Leshrac dies while casting this spell, explosioins will occur at the area where he dies..

Level 1 - Releases 4 pulses every second, and each pulse deals 12.5 damage. Total 400 damage
Level 2 - Releases 4 pulses every second, and each pulse deals 25 damage. Total 800 damage.
Level 3 - Releases 4 pulses every second, and each pulse deals 37.5 damage. Total 1200 damage.
Level 4 - Releases 4 pulses every second, and each pulse deals 50 damage. Total 1600 damage.
    Mana Cost: 95/ 120/ 135/ 155
    Cooldown: 30

    Lightning Storm:
Calls a lightning storm that hits nearby enemies.

    Level 1 - 80 damage, jumps twice.
Level 2 - 145 damage, jumps three times.
Level 3 - 205 damage, jumps four times.
Level 4 - 265 damage, jumps five times.
    Mana Cost: 100/ 115/ 130/ 145
    Cooldown: 7

    Pulse Nova:
Summons a Pulse Nova every 2.25 seconds to damage nearby enemies. Drains 50 mana per second until deactivated.

Level 1 - 66 (88 with Scepter) damage per nova.
Level 2 - 100 (133 with Scepter) damage per nova.
Level 3 - 144 (177 with Scepter) damage per nova.
    Mana Cost: 143+20 per second/ 165+40 per second/ 187+60 per s
    Cooldown: N/A

Some notes surrounding Pulse Nova. You'll notice that it drains massive amounts of mana while kept on. Doing the maths, the damage it deals is not worth the amount of mana expended by leaving it on. The smarter use of Pulse Nova is to toggle it on and off manually, and quickly. You can achieve this by tapping the hotkey, "v" rapidly. It'll take a certain amount of practice to switch Pulse Nova on and off without wasting mana. Also note that repeated spamming of the "v" key will NOT make your overall damage increase on Pulse Nova. So, this means that you've got to learn to time your tapping. Thus, allowing you to deal the most amount of damage in the shortest allowed time of 2.25 seconds per pulse.

I.E. turn Pulse Nova on and off quickly every 2.25 seconds.

P.S. Take note that the mana drain of Pulse Nova increases every level and so does its activation cost. Also, when I mean activate/use Pulse Nova in this guide, it refers to the tapping method

    Skill Build:
    Level 1: Diabolic Edict
    Level 2: Stats
    Level 3: Diabolic Edict
    Level 4: Stats
    Level 5: Diabolic Edict
    Level 6: Pulse Nova
    Level 7: Diabolic Edict
    Level 8: Split Earth
    Level 9: Split Earth
    Level 10: Split Earth
    Level 11: Pulse Nova
    Level 12: Split Earth
    Level 13: Stats
    Level 14: Stats
    Level 15: Stats
    Level 16: Pulse Nova
    Level 17: Stats
    Level 18: Stats
    Level 19: Stats
    Level 20: Stats
    Level 21: Stats
    Level 22: Lightning Storm
    Level 23: Lightning Storm
    Level 24: Lightning Storm
    Level 25: Lightning Storm

    Explanations for skill build:
-Diabolic Edict is your farming tool and main weapon for killing. Hence, max it out as soon as possible.

-A couple of stats early on is to add durability to Leshrac by giving him armor, health and extra mana to help out in early game farming and using Pulse Nova later on in mid game. While +4 int alone might not seem to be much, every bit helps!

-Lightning Storm is largely ignored in this build as I personally find it useless. It's just a simple nuke with no other effect. While it jumps and has the potential to hit a couple of enemy heroes, I find Pulse Nova and Split Earth more reliable in hitting large groups of heroes and creeps. Mana could be better spent on his other spells.

-With that being said, it doesn't necessarily mean that Lightning Storm should be gotten only at the end of the game. You could get it at level 13, after mastering Split Earth. I personally recommend stats as this build does not get hp-adding items for Leshrac and the stats will be very handy. Also, the mana regeneration and mana bonuses from the stats add up and are very useful to Leshrac, especially at mid game.

-If you do get Lightning Storm, use it only as a finisher (if the enemy manages to escape) and not as a starter. Your mana could be better spent on Pulse Nova! Of course by mid-late game, when mana isnt an issue, use Lightning Storm as you deem fit. But generally, try not to use it as your opening attacks as the element of surprise and timing is important for this strategy to work.

This is largely dependent on the hero match-up in my lane and the general skill of the opponents. Do not be overly dogmatic and stick to it unconditionally. Be flexible. If you cant seem to manage the nuking of enemies, get life regeneration or a couple of gauntlets. Throw in a point booster if necessary. Leshrac farms really easily and money is not a real issue for him.

    Null Talisman
    Boots of Speed
    Dagger of Escape
    Null Talisman

    From here, you could go

    Robe of the Magi/Sobi Mask
Eul's Scepter of Divinity or Oblivion Staff
    Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse

    OR

    Staff of Wizardry
    Blades of Attack
    Dagon

After which, you could go for

    Boots of Travel
    Power Treads
    Mask of Madness
    Soulbooster
    Aghanim's Scepter
    Upgrade Dagon
    Black King Bar
Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse/Dagon (depending on which you didn't get earlier)

The item build is specifically tailored towards the strategy, and not intended to fit into general Leshrac play-styles. The items are not impossible to get at all as Leshrac farms easily.

-The couple of Null Talismans are just a cheap way to get more life, armor and mana for Leshrac. The Null Talisman does its job very well.

-The Dagger of Escape IS PIVOTAL to the strategy and must be gotten as early as possible.

-Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse is for disabling so that you can use it to combo into the strategy nicely, or work as an additional disabling skill for your team.

-Dagon is for additional damage to finish off heroes and to counter heroes who get Black King Bar. It would be very useful in games where the heroes have higher hp. Upgrading the Dagon gives you more killing power, and reduces the chances of survivors from your combo.

-Soulbooster is to increase your durability and to build up to Aghanims Scepter, which basically improves your Pulse Nova and thus, killing ability.

-Boots of Travel is valued in this strategy for the mobility it confers onto Leshrac. Run speed is very useful in this strategy.

-Power Treads and Mask of Madness are similarly valued for the bonus movement speeds that they give. Consider them, the poor man's fare, which can be used to tide you past mid game. However, getting Boots of Travel really shouldn't be a problem for Leshrac, especially by mid-late game.

-Black King Bar is to protect you from stunners, disablers and heroes which are generally dangerous to go against in a 1 v 1 situation. A few of which are: Luna, Lina, Nerubian Assassin and Lion. While Lina and Lion's ultimate can pierce through the Black King Bar, you will probably survive it as their other spells can't hurt you. If you can survive their initial attacks, chances are you can kill them if they hang around.

There are possibly other heroes which are dangerous, but Black King Bar coupled with smart playing with your Dagger of Escape should suffice.

Now, into the meat of the strategy.

    HOW IT WORKS: THE HUNT

Basically, any decent player knows that Diabolic Edict rapes through enemy heroes and creep waves alike for 8 seconds, as long as he/she is in the vicinity of Leshrac. It pierces spell immunity AND invisibility, so it basically is a powerful staple against every hero. Also, it continues to fire off even after death, akin to Luna's Eclipse. All in all, we have a very powerful and useful spell with high farming and hero-killing potential, with a low cooldown of possibly 16 to 20 seconds at most. It even tears through Rhasta's wards!

What do people do when they realize that Diabolic Edict has locked onto them? They run. Or they try to blink, or go invisible. Either way, nothing will save them as long as you can follow them closely. And the answer to the completion of the equation is&

    Dagger of Escape.

Basically, you could try various ways of utilizing your dagger to maximize the power of Diabolic Edict.

Firstly, you could try to cast edict and blink in directly beside the enemy hero. Next, toggle Pulse Nova on and off and give chase. Use Split Earth to stun during the chase so that your Diabolic Edict can keep up.
Alternatively, you could sneak in on the enemy hero and turn Diabolic Edict, followed by a Pulse Nova and Split Earth. Once the guy starts running, blink in and give chase. Alternatively, save the Split Earth and blink in and stun.

Depending on the situation, you will want to decide smartly if you should use the blink for initiating the combo or for chasing or for escaping. These decisions will determine the outcome of the battle, and the decisions should be made largely in view of the hero you're fighting, your mana pool, your possible damage output, the hero's items and whether or not your teammates or enemies teammates are around.

For example, there is a lone enemy Drow with man creeps surrounding her. You will most likely want to blink in with Diabolic Edict cast before the blink and turning on Pulse Nova at the same time. This should cream most of the creeps, causing the Diabolic Edict to focus on the Drow. At the same time, Split Earth the possible direction where she would run towards to stun her and give chase after that.

However, if she has Lothars Edge, you might want to blink in with a Split Earth stun first, followed by Diabolic Edict and Pulse Nova. This is to prevent her from windwalking and silencing you early, When she recovers, she will possibly windwalk, and you should give chase in the direction which Diabolic Edict hints.

Alternatively, you could try to run into the Drow with Diabolic Edict and Pulse Nova activated. If possible stun her before she can silence. Should she run with windwalk, blink chase her in the direction as suggested by Diabolic Edict.

The idea is to destroy many creeps with Diabolic Edict/Pulse Nova quickly, so that your Diabolic Edict can focus on the hero solely, causing massive damage. If you can get the hero to run away alone, his/her fate is possibly sealed, as long as you can aim your Split Earth stun accurately.

When fighting large-scale battles, use Pulse Nova and Diabolic Edict first. The amount of chaos it causes is unbelievable. Forget about blink and save Split Earth only on heroes running away or to interrupt channeling spells. This is due to Split Earths harder to target nature, hence it shouldnt be used in a chaotic situation. Only use it when things are more, stabilized. Save the blink to chase down heroes or to escape from a sticky situation.

A good tip against stunners is to save your blink for them. Once you see them firing the stun at you, blink beside them and release your Diabolic Edict/Split Earth/Pulse Nova combo. This achieves 2 things. Firstly, you evade their stun, and secondly you have them ready for a combo.

Of course heroes such as Rhasta or Lion who can disable more than once easily and quickly can foil your plans. This is where Black King Bar/Guinsoos Scythe of Vyse will play an important role. Guinsoos Scythe of Vyse complements your ability to chase and to keep the enemy hero in the range of your Diabolic Edict/Pulse Nova. Black King Bar grants you the ability of an unhindered chase.

A dagon is useful in games where the enemy heroes tend to have higher hp, such as strength-based heroes. As the spells have a cooldown, and the high-hp heroes can escape your combos with possibly, red or orange health, the additional damage from a dagon would be a useful addition to net the kill. Also when against enemies who use Black King Bar, they will realize that against a Leshrac played as such, coupled with a Dagon, is still a dangerous threat to them as Diabolic Edict and Dagon pierces through their immunity. It also helps to remember that your blink allows you to pre-empt the enemy before he/she can activate the Black King Bar by blinking beside them and throwing in Split Earth, followed by Pulse Nova.

The use of Power Treads and Mask of Madness are ways to increase your run speed so that you can keep up with the enemy in a chase. However, do remember that Frenzy causes you to take more damage, and damage is normally received easily during chases due to creeps. Take note of your health and the possible counter-measures the enemy heroes can take (such as casting his nuke after its cooldown is complete during the course of the chase) while chasing. I would recommend using Frenzy to chase only when your blink dagger is still cooling and the enemy is in the red-life zone. That way, you can catch him and kill him fast.

Generally, a longer chase puts you in greater danger. Sometimes, you might want to save your Dagger of Escape for escaping from a chase should accidents occur. Such cases often happen in games where teamwork is more prevalent and teammates are quick to react to SOS calls. Also, try not to chase over great distances, for obvious reasons of being ganged by the enemy team. If you cant get the enemy this time round, just let him or her escape. There will be other chances. Its better you not die but at least send the enemy hero packing.

Sometimes, smart players will learn how to minimize the damage from Diabolic Edict by quickly making sharp turns around and running in the opposite direction, throwing you off-guard. This can be offset if you learn to have faster reflexes or you use Frenzy on the Mask of Madness so that you can move faster. You could make it a habit to chase enemies bit-by-bit. This means, instead of right clicking a long distance ahead, just click relatively smaller distances which are slightly ahead of the enemy heros unit model. This way, there is a lower chance of you running way past the enemy hero should he or she suddenly turn around abruptly. Alternatively, just save your blink dagger for such situations and blink to them to keep up the chase.

Lastly, when you do use Lightning Storm, use it only after Diabolic Edict and Pulse Nova has been activated. In a way, it damages the enemy hero and clears remaining creeps so that Diabolic Edict can be more effective. Also, you could use it as a finisher during the chase as it has a relatively low cooldown.

    Early game:

You will want to farm conservatively, staying back and netting last hit creep kills. Diabolic Edict is a wonderful farming tool once it hits level 2 and should be use as often as possible. Use Diabolic Edict on enemy heroes who wander too near to the front or are chasing you or your ally down. It hurts! Try not to be overly offensive early game as you do not have the means of killing anybody yet. Lie low and farm for your Dagger of Escape.

    Mid game:

Generally, I define mid-game for Leshrac as the period which he first gets his Dagger of Escape. Normally, this happens around level 7 to 10, depending on the game situation. Now, you can begin your hunting. Use the above mentioned tactics to get your kills. Also note that you can clear massive amounts of creep waves easily by now with Diabolic Edict and Pulse Nova alone. Start thinking of your late game items by assessing the game situation in terms of hero lineups. If you need more disabling, get Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse. If you need more spell damage due to enemy heroes getting Black King Bar or them getting hp-adding items, get a Dagon and upgrade it. If you think you need more durability, aim for an Aghanim's Scepter. Get a Black King Bar if you realize the enemy is always nuking you to oblivion due to your low health but high damage output.

    Late game:

You should be feared by now in most 1 on 1 situations, and that is a boon to Leshrac when played this way as you gain a much greater advantage the moment you can place an enemy on the run. Think of him as the DOTA version of Everquest's Necromancer class, except that instead of using DoT spells+Fear to make an enemy run to his doom, you use Diabolic Edict and chase him down. Basically, if you can get him on the run, you're in a better position. Do watch out for ambushes though! Also, large-scale battles should be often. Remember to use Pulse Nova and Diabolic Edict to create chaos in the fights! The massive area damage caused by Pulse Nova is not be laughed at, especially if the enemy heroes cluster. If they do spread, then signal to your team to attempt to pick them off 1 by 1. Try using Split Earth on 1 or 2 heroes at the back ranks while your team works on the front ranks. This way, you could punish them for spreading. Or while your team is busy attacking their front rank heroes, you could blink behind and damage their back rank heroes (normally casters/support), and cause chaos with your spell spamming. Use your Pulse Nova to clear their creep waves and perhaps, hit 1 or 2 heroes instead of trying to use it to hit all their heroes. Remember to use whatever items you have to complement your team!

There, it's done. This strategy is by no means easy to master and accomplish, but defintely do-able. I've used it in inhouses before and raped many. Granted it's powerful, the lack of hp on Leshrac forces you to be a very conservative and smart player. Keep practicing! And remember that Leshrac functions as both a great farmer and also a hero killer AND team player due to his massive AoE damage potential. Integrate your skills with your teammates to achieve the most desirable results. Additional stuns and disabling always hurts the enemy.
