Serie A Preview: AC Milan- AS Roma
In what is sure to be an entertaining affair, Milan will look to lock down second place, while Roma want to keep their chances for a European spot alive.
Kick-Off: Sunday, May 24 15:00 CET. San Siro, Milan
Changing Of The Guard
While the main focus this Sunday for Milan will be to get a victory and three more points to try and secure second place in the Serie A table, the thought of this being the last home fixture of Paolo Maldini’s career surely cannot be forgotten.
With Juventus just three points behind the Rossoneri in the standings with Fiorentina lurking as well, Milan are still not assured of skipping the preliminary qualifying rounds in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Even by losing both remaining matches, Milan cannot drop out of the top four. However, they want to go ahead and lock down a guaranteed European place by winning this Sunday against Roma.
In climbing back up the Serie A table and giving Inter something to think about before the Nerazzurri ultimately secured the Scudetto last weekend, Milan had played the most attractive and effective football of any side in the league. But in the last two matches, they have lost that magic touch. Drawing at home against Juventus two weeks ago effectively ended their challenge for the Scudetto, and losing away to Udinese last Saturday handed the title to Inter.
That being said, I doubt they will come out flat again this Sunday. The stadium will be packed to the rafters, as they will attempt to get a view of legendary Milan captain Paolo Maldini, who makes his final appearance in the home shirt in this match.
According to the club’s official website, Maldini will take a lap around the pitch to salute the supporters. Not only that, but the squad will be wearing new jerseys released in time for this occasion.
Hanging On By A Thread
With the lack of proper additions to the squad last summer and the injury troubles they have suffered from, particularly to club captain and attacking fulcrum Francesco Totti, Roma have been a shell of the side that challenged Inter for the past few years.
Roma are no longer the freewheeling side that challenged Inter for the Scudetto up until the final match of last season. They tried to purchase adequate replacements for their departed players last summer, but those transfers clearly did not work out, and they have lacked that attacking edge that they displayed so often for the last three years.
However, the most obvious problem is not the attack, but actually the defence. To this date, they have allowed an astonishing total of 57 goals this term, which is just one less than the number of goals they have scored. Part of this can be attributed to the injuries they have sustained, but you also just have to say that they haven’t played well.
All you have to do for an accurate comparison is to look at their opponent in this match. Milan have not had the services of many of their defenders at different times this season, yet they have the second-best defensive record in Serie A behind Inter.
Because of this lack of ability in defence, Roma risk not playing in any European competition next season. They are currently in sixth place, which would put them in the newly-formed Europa League, but both Palermo and Udinese can jump ahead of them in the standings before all is said and done.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Milan
Filippo Inzaghi has slowed down a bit from the blistering pace he set by scoring so many goals in the second half of the season, but he is still trying very hard and could net against a weakened Roma defense. Paolo Maldini is playing for the last time in front of his hometown supporters, and the emotions will be prevalent for everyone in the stadium.
Roma
Despite only making twenty starts this season, Francesco Totti leads the club in goals scored. Therefore, his scoring will decided whether or not Roma gets anything from this match.
PREDICTION
Milan have struggled in the last two matches, especially in attack, but they maintain their record as the best home side in Serie A in terms of victories. Conversely, Roma have been atrocious on the road this season, losing nine of eighteen. These factors combined mean that Paolo Maldini will win his last match in front of the Curva Sud.
Milan 1-0 Roma
