Sarawak To Introduce 'Kenyalang Steps' Comparable To Popular Indonesian 'Poco Poco' Dance
SIBU, July 18(Bernama) -- Sarawak has developed its own version of the ever popular Indonesian line dance, the Poco Poco.
The "Kenyalang Steps"(Senaman Kenyalang) will be introduced to the public on Sunday at the Sibu Gateway during the launch of the Sarawak Cultural Workout, a mass exercise, at 7.30pm.
Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Robert lau Hoi Chew, who is also Sibu Member of Parliament, will launch the event where a 1,500 turn-out is expected.
Paul kimpoi Pipo, an assistant secretary of the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry, told a news conference today that CDs on the new dance would be distributed to popularise it.
He said the "Kenyalang Steps" was developed by the Sarawak Physical Education and Recreation Association.
"The Poco Poco line dance originating from the Minhasa people of Sulawesi has been a very popular group exercise among the people in the state since its introduction about two years ago.
But it originates from Indonesia. So we want to have something which is truly Sarawakian in nature and which can be enjoyed by every race in the state," he said.
He said the Kenyalang Steps incorporated steps from popular dances of the state's various ethnic communities performed to a similar fusion of tunes.
"Thus, we will have the Orang Ulu Sape (lute) music to be complemented by the "Taboh"( traditional music) of the Ibans, the Bidayuh, Melanau and the Chinese drum beats for instance." he said.
It was another effort to promote the state and its multiracial and cultural identity through exercise besides instilling the spirit of patriotism among the new generation as the state celebrates it 45th Merdeka anniversary through Malaysia, he added.
He also said that the state-level Aerofit and Aerofithon competition would commence at the Civic Centre here immediately after the launch.
Eleven teams from throughout the state will take part in the event, jointly organised by his ministry and the National Fitness Council to select the state representatives for national and international-level competitions.
